Jamaica is a small island, at 4,213 square miles. It is located in the Caribbean, south of Cuba and west of Hispaniola at exactly 18.1096° N, 77.2975° W. The word “Jamaica” means "land of wood and water" or "land of springs" in the Taino native language. The terrain is mountainous, as the Antilles are basically the underwater tips of Andes. The highest peak is the Blue Mountain Peak at 7,402 feet. The weather is hot and humid, and temperatures rarely drop below 70 degrees. The average rainfall is 77 in. About 41% of the land is agricultural. Hurricanes can threaten the land, especially from July to November. Some major water features are Blue Lagoon, Dunn's River Falls, Rio Grande, Martha Brae River, and Somerset Falls. Geography and terrain are part of what makes Jamaica the country that it is.
