The Green Grotto Caves in Jamaica are surrounded by vegetation and clear blue water. The Tainos used these caves for multiple purposes. Because of this, fragments of pottery are unearthed sometimes. In the 17th century, when the English invaded Jamaica, Spaniards hid in these caves while being driven out of the country. In the middle of the 20th century, between WWI and WWII, the caves were used by smugglers bringing weapons to Cuba. In the later years of WWII, Jamaica used the mouth of the cave as a storeroom for barrels of rum. Now, the Green Grotto Caves are a popular natural attraction for Jamaican tourists.
